Trolling planets vs lead core line.

I'm trying to understand the purpose of lead core fishing line.

I was once a charter guy, being the mate on my grandfather's boat in the 70s and 80s. We used depth planers down to about 40 feet. Below that we would use down riggers. Although we rarely needed to do that.

You could adjust depth by letting out line on the planer/downrigger and distance from the boat by letting out line from the rod.

Lead core and wire line are just another way to get whatever you're trolling down deep. In general the more weighted line you let out, the deeper you are trolling. We used to drag bunker spoons behind wire and it was a very productive way to fish. Haven't done it in many years so maybe I'll dust off some of our old wire line set ups next year.
