Nice catch! It’s great that you are getting your son involved. I’m right there with you with my 5 turning 6 son. Fishing and crabbing (along with camping) have been our favorite hobbies together and he’s starting to develop a love for the kayaking aspect of how we do it as well. This year he’s graduating from bluegill to rockfish and he’s as excited as I am for the early trophy season and all season for that matter.

I agree with thill on the lure choice for the early season. All I run daytime through dark is 5-7” albino shad assassin on chartreuse 3/8-1/2oz head. It’s our choice up north in the sussy as well. Later in the season we switch to other color combos and lures but for early season that is where it’s at.

Good luck out there and if if you decide to try up north shoot me a PM and I’ll guide you to some good 6yr old friendly spots to go. Just make sure you have something heavier than the ultra-light ;)
