Combat lifesaver (TCCC/TECC) - cadaver lab on Friday.

I managed to hold my food down.

It got messy and downright medieval.

instructor (multi-decade veteran of NYC EMS) opening up the body bag. he has been training USAF pararescue and Navy special warfare personnel in tactical combat casualty care during the ramp-up of GWOT.

Our donor was a military-aged male.  God bless you sir.  I thank you for your selfless donation, promise to make good use of skills learned, and pray your family and loved ones are at peace.

bleeding (tourniquet, wound packing, pressure)

nonsurgical airway (npa, opa, king)

surgical airway (cricothyrotomy)

tension pneumothorax needle decompression

tension pneumothorax finger thoracostomy

tension pneumothorax chest tube

emergency limb amputation in the field with a sawzall (very fast but very messy - i had to burn my pants and shoes afterwards)

thoracic cavity anatomy (heart, lungs)

we made incisions

we stuck our fingers in these holes

pretty dynamic stuff

just not the same as working with a dummy

Hard core Wewe. What were you participating in that for?

it's part of being a well-rounded defensive firearms owner.

-learn pistol

-learn carbine

-learn blade

-get in shape

-lean combatives

-LEARN FIRST AID

You can bleed to death in 3 minutes.

Average ambulance response from time of call is 9 minutes.

Ergo, you can bleed to death 3x while waiting for the cavalry.

Where might you find yourself in a situation like this?  For JimP - on the battlefield.  For the rest of us - at a school, at a mall.

Sobering.

Cool. Very cool. Continuing education for your hobbies is fun. But you are well beyond that. Even in fishing knowledge of first aid is important. I got a few sucher(sp) kits for long trips and hunting trips.

What level class was that? How do you get to go to that kind of class?

Primarily taught to .mil

Take a one day TECC class first - you'll get more out of it.  No mess, only a few hundred $$$.

The cadaver labs are $$$ because the cadavers are very expensive.

Our Bluebirds have been taking food into the bird house and removing "poop pellets" for the last week or more. They are quite busy.
