Rickman
This "Tailless Wonder" was around last year too. I think he was a new hatch last year. Doesn't seem any worse for the missing feathers. Also, a few Treagles. KidDkivahh, plugchucker and PCstriper 3 "In the beginning, God..." "Blessing come from many directions. Make sure you look around." BrianBM
I wonder what injury the Tailless Wonder could have suffered that left him (permanently?) without the ability to grow new tail feathers. Was he a much-abused second chick in the nest, mauled repeatedly by the firstborn hatchling? Impressive that he's survived with a tail. Someone on FB just told me he is a 3 year old by his coloring and beginning white head. I saw him a few times last year. He actually fishes quite well without it as a rudder. Someone last year said that whatever happened, the quills were pulled out so will never regrow. If the quills are not damaged or removed they will apparently. "In the beginning, God..." Rickman
I'm pretty sure this is one of the two fledglings from the nest on the lower power tower at Conowingo that hatched late Feb/early March so about 3 months old.. He flew from the tree, lost his fish and landed further down in the second tree. Edited May 31, 2020 by Rickman PCstriper, plugchucker and KidDkivahh 3 "In the beginning, God..." Rickman
These are the last ones from Saturday's outing. The first two are barely cropped from the sides, nothing top or bottom. They were that close. As I was leaving and at the end of the parking lot, there I saw five out of the corner of my eye, apparently fighting to get to a floating fish in the water. I quickly parked at got these at the tail end of the spat. One adult got the fish and flew directly away from me so no shot of him. I got this juvie and one of the adults. This is the same juvie that was in the tree with a fish in the earlier set. KidDkivahh, PCstriper and Terry Mac 3 "In the beginning, God..." "Blessing come from many directions. I know, spot burn. What fish are they going for? I suspect a shad but that looks more like a trout. Although I doubt a trout lives there.......
