Don't see any 'yotes???

Nice bear and some running deer.....

That last pic, you think that's a deer? I can't really tell, but there was grey yote that I had captured on the cam in the past. That's what I thought that one was.

You know it must be a penguin bound down if you hear that terrible screaming and there ain't no other birds around.

So, you see a coyote, too.

That's what I would have called it.  But perhaps it is clearer if you can blow it up.  Thought that tail was a white tail flag.

I can see that interpretation, but the rest of it doesn't look like a deer to me at all. I did blow it iup but it's not really clearer. lol

Doing some work in the garage and I hear this noise coming from one of my palm trees. Sounds like some sort of bird, but like nothing I've ever heard, though they say mockingbirds have around two hundred different calls.

Go over to take a look and this racer has a frog from behind, game over.

Yeah - PA did a fawn survival study a few years back.  This was a duplicate of one they did about 10 years earlier than that.

Found that the most common cause of death by predation was:

1) black bear

2) coyote

3) bob cat

They could tell by what was left.  Bears - ate everything - hide and all.  Coyotes ate the guts first - they must like liver.  Bobcats ate the hind quarter first and covered the kill with sticks to come back and eat some more.

1 and 2 were essentially tied for numbers and it depended more on location - big woods or farm and woodlot country.

Other causes of mortality were:

  • Disease
  • Mom got hit by a car and fawn starved
  • Fawn got hit by car or other accident.
  • Later in the fall - hunting season takes a % of fawns during antlerless season.

Mother nature is really cool.  Due to their breeding ecology deer dump all their babies on the world in about the same 2 week time period.  While they are very vulnerable to predators at this time - they can only eat so many - so a whole lot survive.  If it were more spread out a greater % would be eaten.
