1st rodbuilding project: rewrapping old rod (part 1)

Started my first rod building project, rewrapping an older G-Loomis GL3 SJR 844 which is now 6 inches shorter since I broke off 6 inches taking the guides off. Was working on getting off the last running guide, when snap. Live and learn.

Decided to wrap it KR concept with 5.5 running guides. 20, 10, 5.5 reduction guides. KL-H. Gunsmoke.

Notes so far. (haven't started epoxy process yet)

1) Guides came off pretty easy using a heat gun and razor. Was going so well, I got cocky, and broke the rod at last guide.

2) My vision stinks. Even with reading glasses it was tough to see.......(#3)

3) Black thread on a dark blank, not a smart choice for your first build

4) I improved with each guide I did. Actually amazed at how much better I was doing (relatively speaking) on my 10th guide compared to my first 2 or 3.

I don't think so, just the standard KL-H in Gunsmoke with SIC .

Really like my other rods that are KR concept, casts great and the tip feels "lighter" with the micros.

My only suggestion would be to put a Forhan lock in front of each guide (maybe next time?).

buz, thank you, and that was considered. I spoke to a number of people regarding wrapping micros, and about half suggested the Forhan lock, and half don't use it. I'll see how this rod works out, and maybe consider for the next build.

Thanks for the comments.

Been practicing the wraps every night, I'm much better (more comfortable) then when I first tried.

Probably going to undue these, and wrap them nicer (more consistent lengths, etc) and using a single trip band, which I can do.

I don't wrap a lot of rods but one thing i do adhere to is if I don't like the way it looks i will cut it away and do it over until i like it.

The length of the wrap in your pic on such a small guide could be tightened up, get on it ;)
