MikeMc, they were trying to implement Kaizen. You were extremely lucky to work in a place that valued your opinion.  Good managers go to the people who do the actual work because they are in the best position to know how to make their job better. This whole "I'm not paid to do that" is exactly why we are getting our butts kicked by overseas manufacturers.  When companies increase efficiency, they lower the costs of production.  


Most of that lowered cost goes to upper management but it keeps your job here.
