From Emergency Services;

We have been advised that a number of Ocracoke businesses are posting regarding termination of the Mandatory Visitor Evacuation Order. Officially we would like to clarify that it is likely that visitors will be allowed to return some time this weekend, but no definitive time can be released because work continues to repair the main-line transmission.

this sounds promising, but ive learned a thing or two about counting my chickens...

Wednesday, 8/2/17 8PM UPDATE: Cape Hatteras Electric Cooperative (CHEC) made more headway on transmission restoration today.

Overhead Progress:  Crews continued to construct the new overhead transmission line today.  Lee Electrical Construction has installed all three cables needed for the overhead solution.  New River Electrical is now working on the complex and detailed process required to connect these cables to the grid.  The cooperative and contractors are working tirelessly to ensure that transmission restoration will happen as quickly and safely as possible.

Next Steps: Once construction of the new line is complete and all of the cables are connected, the next step will be for CHEC to energize the line.  The new line will need to stay energized for 12 to 24 hours before the cooperative can begin to gradually introduce electrical load.

Timeframe: The restoration timeframe from this point forward is 2-3 days. This includes the time required for testing after all construction is complete and before transmission service can begin. CHEC is also working with Dare County officials to coordinate the safe return of visitors as soon as possible.

Beginning Friday, August 4 at 12:00 p.m. there will be unrestricted access to Hatteras Island. As crews continue energizing circuits on the island with the repaired transmission line, Cape Hatteras Electric Cooperative (CHEC) has assured local officials that reliable and adequate power will be available to enable the return of visitors on Friday afternoon.

The mandatory power restrictions for Hatteras Island are now lifted to allow CHEC to complete the safe stabilization of the power grid.

Visitors are encouraged to contact their Hatteras Island accommodations provider to confirm their reservation and arrival plans.

Visitors traveling to Hatteras Island may consider an alternate route from the west to expedite travel. From I-95 in North Carolina, take US-64 East towards Rocky Mount. Follow US-64 East through Williamston and Plymouth, NC. From Plymouth, NC keep going east to Roanoke Island and follow Highway 12 South to Hatteras Island.

Word is still on for Ocracoke opening Saturday....
