Just got the BG 5000, love it, tested it on Cape Cod Bay first outing , 5 days of fishing, lots of Stripers, still going strong for $120

The best backup reel IMHO is a Penn 706 (or a Dam Quick 3000 or 4000 if you can find one)

It's nice to know that your backup is bulletproof

My backup reels are a conflict and a penn 706. Each has its own application. If im fishing hard in the surf ill use the 707 because itll withstand the beating. If Its calmer out and I'm fishing fast water or i need faster pickup ill use the conflict

Glad to see this thread - sold a ton of gear to downsize in numbers but upgrade in quality....now I have a brother in law who wants to fish but needs to borrow gear..and I wouldn't mind a back up that I can just toss around (This guy drops stuff into sand, water, knocks things on rocks, etc...names like Stella and saltiga are not names I'm going to introduce him to...lol)
