ksong
I observed how Dennis Braid fighting a giant in PEI 8 - 9 years ago when there were only three charter boat in PEI. I thought it is unrealistic to use 60 plus lb drag on standup. But it is done routinely by even casual anglers in PEI. Here are pictures of fighting giant in 600 lb - 900 lb standup and the fighting time usually less than one hour, sometimes 20 - 30 minitues. We landed over 200 giant using light 6' Black Hole Giant rods in PEI last 4 - 5 years and they prefer acid wrapped rod. with Dennis Braid 71 yeard old Mel fighting a giant fighting a giant using custom Black Hole Giant rod with Capt Jimmy the Greek off Cape Cod another giant using custom Black Hole Giant rod with Capt Jimmy The Greek off Cape Cod ladies can do it. see how much drag they are using. I even fight a giant.
AdrianF
I'd love to go up there.... Interesting to see the preference for ring guides. Is there really any reason to go with rollers any more on anything. Was thinking of doing a few spiral stand up rods...ur giant blank would be too much rod for down here...but could u use the 450g cape cod special? Seem to recall them having issues with aluminum butts/reel seats. re-ban quest
ksong
We tested using regular guides, spiral wrapped guide as well as roller guides. The issue of high sitting roller guides is the rod can be broken when using 50 plus lb drag as the most standup rod have thin blanks and the rods got twisted heavily pulled by giant. We found the spiral rods prevent the twisting and can endure 60 - 70 lb drag. When you use drag below 50 lb, there is no issue whether you use regular guides or roller guides. There was only one time 450g got broken by giant in NC when the 450g rod had alluminum real seat. The 450g rod get bent under the reel seats when pulled hard and we suspect the aluminum reel seat prevent to get bent. However, Greg landed 750 lb giant and I landed 600 lb giant using cusotm Black Hole Cape Cod 450g rods with aluminum reel seat using 50 plus lb drag. But I still recommend to use graphite reel seats for Black Hole Cape Cod jigging rods.
