8 inch long nose Vice Grip... They are strong and once you grab the hook it  wont let go. Just a little twist and the fish is  released... They will even cut hook......

manley, the bigger one, I think it's 6"

doesn't cut braid and the jaws are short, BUT they really last, you can allow them to rust if you don't have the means to rinse them all the time and they cut hooks. The rust can be brushed off periodically and they'll still be fine.

They cut hooks, like if you put one through your finger. Some people claim they will never have have a need for this and good for them, I say. I know myself and I like the insurance.

take builders pliers

all of you

take heavy duty pliers and not "made for fishing" ones

and that will be good enough  -  always GO STRONGER

Glos, im curious and mean no offense, but do you ocean fish? I only ask because a pair of pliers like that would seize up after 1 trip.

That's not true at all. I use regular steel needle nose pliers. They have a cutter that works great for mono. I have a knife that cuts braid. I spritz the joint with WD-40 about once a month. They are stronger and more durable than any of those aluminum ones and cost only a couple bucks or free because you probably have 5 of them laying around. Those cheap aluminum ones break if you twist them. These will never break. I don't care if they're brown from surface corrosion.

I mean, that last line kind of proves my point.. If you dont care about jamming and working with rusted up pliers then i guess you are right? Just dont forget to spritz them with WD40 so they dont seize up.

Personally, i have used regular steel pliers. After the first trip they are rusting up. Forget to rinse them for a couple days and they are a mess.

I never rinse mine. If you want no corrosion and high durability, then you're going to spend $300 on titanium. And even then, with your big investment, you're going to baby them, rinse them after every trip, worry about losing them, etc.

I just don't see the point of spending more than $5 on pliers. Ironically, the cheapest aluminum ones are more expensive and are guaranteed to break the first time you have to pull a treble out of a bluefish.

So you rinse every trip. I spray with WD-40 once a month. Who has more maintenance?

Negative sir. I spent 100$ on a pair of Donnmar 17-4 Stainless Pliers. That was after fishing with a guide who has had them for 20 years and never once had rinse of spray them with WD-40. And they looked great, also have a lifetime warranty.

Ego now makes a pair of Titanium pliers for 199$ thats getting good reviews as well.

I have no qualms with guys who use 5$ rusted pliers. If they work for you,and youre ok with using them, go for it. Personally, i like not having to worry about it.

And even if they're brown, who cares? You make it sounds like they're encrusted with barnacles or something. They get used, abused and losed (ok that's not a real word, but it rhymes and if I did lose them, I have 3 more on my bench at home). ;-)

Tackle Direct had a sale last year ... $29 ... no rust, cut braid, 2nd year with them  ... rinse occasionally. They are on my kayak or my waders. Constantly emerged.

second the Donmar one of the best investments in gear I've made after going through many 20-40 pliers.
