dleopoldi914
what action rod are you using? Threw a pencil popper for the first time last night and agree it is an exersice. I am using a moderate fast action rod.

LGFishing
Do you guys think Cotton Cordell or Tsunami Poppers work better for blues?

Blues dont care.. least discerning fish out there.. they'll hit anything that moves. I use whatever in my bag is oldest and beat up the most.  With bass it's a different story. Edited October 12, 2019 by Beachglass Guru Dreamland

Any hard plastic works well. I try not to throw good wood plugs when blues are swarming. Both plugs Cordell and Tsunami work good though. I tend to lean more towards the tsunami talk and pop.
valentine
I found a bunch of Cotton Cordell pencils on closeout, last year, so I bought everything they had. Funny thing is I’m still using the original one I had before I found them on sale. It’s got almost no paint left on it and I’ve had to change the hooks a time or two but the body is intact and still catches.  Funny thing; Last time I changed the rear hook I tied on a yellow bucktail and I noticed a significant decrease in its catching performance. Not sure if the action changed or if it’s me but the plug isn’t producing like it did before I used a dressed hook.
gcjeep14
I’m glad you mentioned the difference after you put on a yellow bucktail.  I have noticed it also and I started to change back to white, all my poppers and metals seem to be more productive  (white ) when fishing.
Sandeel95
years ago I fished the rips off the Cape using old cedar plugs without hooks. Blues would chase them like crazy. Needed to repaint them after several trips. Now for the fun part. When you get the blues chasing your plug, your partner throws out a 3/0 Deceiver and starts stripping.  Nothing like a 15 to 20 lb. blue going skyward. Try it, you may like it Sandeel95

bayyaker54
These are my go to for blues, don’t forget to crush the barbs, and if they get unbuttoned, there just doing you a favor. valentine and Popasilov
PoppinBottles19
I load the 6" cotton cordell pencil with copper bbs and put a 2/0 vmc 4x treble as a rear hook. Remove the front hook all together. Comes out just under 3 oz and casts like a bullet. Yeah, it's the best when a bluefish unhooks itelf before I have to go hands on. I love their fight but not their dangerous thrashing when you're trying to get your lure back. BStripen401
Bluefish are a great fight but like said the thrashing all over the place and the snapping at you trying to unhook. Single hook is much easier especially since one hooked me in the Hand with the back treble on a SP that night sucked.
