I'm not even sure where I would go around here (Mass) in Jan or Feb for that matter. Known holdover spots and power plant outlets if you can access them I guess. Or areas I target for stripers in very early spring. although it's mostly freshwater for me then. Much depends on the weather too. If we get a deep freeze in those months without any mild spell, it's going to be difficult. Most winters we do have occasional warm spells.

I agree.  I only caught one striped bass in Jan and it was during a warm spell towards the end of the month. Side note my first striper and largemouth where caught on the same day in 2017 (different locations)Screenshot_20171206-101313.thumb.jpg.1820e6a1dad3f2ccccaed3457ce61e24.jpg

Thanks to the redfin and this small holdover striped bass I have now officially caught a striped bass every month of 2017 in Massachusetts!  The wind tonight was tough and my usual hold over spots were not producing so with a little due diligence I found a new spot and caught this little dude :-)

Hey congrats man. ..and on a redfin to boot. Seems like you really dug a bunch of those fish outta nowhere- working/finding new spots when others or "old-reliables" weren't producing. Gotta say thats some impressive fishing & catching.

Thank dude, I use Google earth a lot and try to find similar structure/marsh/length to the spots that I already know produce. More times then not I do not catch at the new spots but some times it works out for the best as in this case.

Almost all my hold overs have come on small soft plastics but almost all my biggest holdover have come on the small redfin (loaded) just slow rolled a foot or so down.

I did get a 20lb holdover on plastics early this season tho.

Do you ever catch them during the day this time of year or just night? I found some in early spring during the day and figured it would produce a few this December but haven’t found any in the spot since Nov 4th. Haven’t tried in the dark yet

Yes but I like to fish these spots at night to try and keep them low key.

Some decent bass the other night during the rain storm...rough conditions but they were chewing hard all night. Could be my last trip of the season looks like some real cold coming will shut them down. Last winter was excellent with all the warm weather but not sure that will be the case this winter. Couple pics but don't judge the face I was exhausted by 2am.

Last month I didn't get a striper in MA was Feb 2015.

Last year I got my January fish through the ice, this year was easy with the warm weather.

Through the ice is awesome. I’ve always wanted to catch a striper on a little ice jigging rod.

Outstanding

I give you guys props...as dumb as it is in the fish harvest hog state of NJ, but yah can't target striped bass in any waters but the Atlantic Ocean from 1/1 until 3/1.  That makes landing one all 12 months a bit more difficult...unless it's an above average temp year there's nothing in our surf in February...or March. It's pretty rare to go 12 for 12 in NJ, I think I've done it twice :o

Tim In another time we did not need to work hard to make the one fish a month caught  on striped bass , but any one doing it today is working hard and long to do that and that is a sign of a dedicated fisherman . We even caught blue fish in January up in Boston harbor as we fished for Cod Fish . We had a challenge among the locals as to see who would get the first bass and or blue fish of the year . In most case the person who won did so on January 1 with not inches of snow on the ground but feet . Another time for sure
