Real nice fish. From the looks of it your new spot was outer space.:) Stinks we've still got 4-5wks to go before migrating bass of this size reach the area.

Wow, hat-tip for getting out as much as you did. Can't imagine it would go over real well if water burst and you were out slaying holdover bass..

Best of luck with big day coming up.

Ive caught a lot of holdovers during the winter some in MA but mostly in CT last week in a certain CT river was insane every cast was a keeper between 30 and 40 inches the heavy rains for some reason get the big fish biting. Late February early March is always the hardest but December-January can easily produce 100 fish days mostly on the small side with a few keepers mixed in. It was such a warm winter I couldn't put the boat away. Pic is from last weeks trip.

2017 has been such an amazing year of fishing for me and I was lucky enough to add a bunch of new species (King salmon, brown shark,American shad, white sucker, tiger trout and a few more) to my species list (Currently working on winter flounder) but this post is about catching striped bass in Massachusetts 12 months out the year and I can say jan, feb, mar, apr, may, jun, jul, aug, sep, oct, and now Nov can be crossed off that list and only dec to go. I have not ran into any holdovers over 28" this month but i am just happy to get out and target the fish we all love. How has everyone else been doing hold over fishing?

Congrats on the productive year.

Haven't made the full switch to winter spots yet, as the last few sm schools of runts and rats are/(were?) still moving along the RI coast. But I took a quick sidetrip to two holdover spots and noticed the bait was way down from the last few late Novembers. Usually see peanuts and adult bunker roaming around slowly in the cooling waters. Just a handful of adults this yr. And no blue runners like I saw late Nov 2 yrs ago. Gave the winter bass a quick effort but came up empty.

Thanks to the redfin and this small holdover striped bass I have now officially caught a striped bass every month of 2017 in Massachusetts!  The wind tonight was tough and my usual hold over spots were not producing so with a little due diligence I found a new spot and caught this little dude :-)

January was by far the hardest month and ty :-)

I'm not even sure where I would go around here (Mass) in Jan or Feb for that matter. Known holdover spots and power plant outlets if you can access them I guess. Or areas I target for stripers in very early spring. although it's mostly freshwater for me then. Much depends on the weather too. If we get a deep freeze in those months without any mild spell, it's going to be difficult. Most winters we do have occasional warm spells.
