What would be the value of it or it’s hard to say the one I’m looking at has the stripped bass

I’m no expert but value is generally in the eye of the beholder for things like that.

the only thing the engraving has going for it in terms of “added value” is that it was offered by the manufacturer if accompanied by documentation (if provided by the company) verifying the authenticity that it is a factory engraved reel, the engravings can “easily” be replicated (by a skilled engraver)

but it’s essentially still a van staal only a collector would potentially value it more.

now if it was a custom engraving, not offered by the manufacturer, well that actually significantly devalues original pieces. If some one bastardized a rolex with a boatload of diamonds in the case for example, it’s lowers the value of the watch significantly even if it cost the person who did it an arm and a leg.

VS didn’t engrave them. They had a gunsmith do the work for them. I would be worried about who did it. There is a company selling engraved Van Staal VR reels.

If you zoom in below the reel pictures it tells you who’s doing the engraving.

From what I know the engraving was done by the person that did them back then and passed away I don’t recall the name of him but These were sold by the original Van Staal company when it was located in Stratford Conn.
The serial number is in the 500 series. The engraving was done by a master gunsmith in Connecticut

l was there at the VS factory in 1997 when he received about 25 reel bodys that were engraved and being returned from the anodizing company. The engraving was done by a master gunsmith Bob Kain of Vermont.

Pictures from my 1996 catalog.

I thought that was a special order lot and made for one guy who was big in the fishing community.

Mermaid engraving could be had by anyone there was no special order for one.

That's Pretty cool, very artistic..... :th:

On some of those reels there's areas that look pretty deep, I wonder how thin that cover got in those areas, its only 1/16th thick to begin with..
