Distance Surfcasting Rod

Trying to get a feel from some of you what ya'll think is the best "Distance" rod for our Noreast type surfcasting.  Whether you own, test casted or flat out view one better than another.

 

Been curious about this for awhile.............

It'll depend on what you want cast with it; the weight, density, and aerodynamics of the presentation.

 

I've never cast one, but I have felt a couple of CTS blanks.  Of what I have seen and read, this would be my best guess.

 

But the real casting experts will always remind us that technique is what will really add the distance.  Couple good technique with a CTS or other high level stick, perfectly chosen for a specific weight and class of lure or lead would get you close to Valhalla.

 

Others more familiar with what's out there will be more specifically useful. Check into the Distance Casting forum and ask those guys.

But careful: you want something for a standard overhead cast, Hatteras or swinging Uni.  True and mind boggling distance is achieved with a fully developed long stroke like a pendulum or Off the Ground Cast.....not as useful for most plug/jig casters.  Maximum loading long stroke casts often use weights that can be a bit lighter than for a common overhead thump. That long-stroke will bend the rod more deeply and accelerate the lure over a much longer distance.

 

Those Cape Cod Canal guys know a huge amount about this subject. I'd guess that group are the most skillful overhead casters in the World.

Thanks Roof.......I was just looking for basic opinions and personal experiences with surf rats.  Myself, i've been partial and successful with the CTS S8 11' (cut down from 11'6") 1-3 oz.....I've been able to reach 150+ with the Gibbs Skipper, as well as, the 2 3/8 SS Little Neck Popper.  I've well exceeded these numbers with some heavy tin/metals....mainly the 2 & 3 oz. AOK T-Hexs

 

Any guys have some numbers with their favorite long distance surf stick?

Roof said it well, most high end rods will give the distance that you are locking for.

I personally use a century 1327 with a aero technium & can out cast most people. I have used the CTS vapor trail & it cast as well as the century but maybe a light lighter.

The very best casting rod I personally have used is a FSC 1487 built by Lou Caruso now this is a lot of rod being 12' & kind of hard to get a full over head cast but when you do wow!

Longest rod I've cast is the CTS S8.  

Longest rod that is more applicable to NE fishing I've cast is the Century S2.

also helped they were using a 3oz lead weighted missle for a plug. Tie on an actual pencil and would go down to 300ft I bet.

I tail weight my pencils so they just barely float.  In good weather it'll go about 130-ish with my GSB1321.  I'd love to see what this setup would do in the hands of someone who really knows that they're doing.

it wasn't a tail weight, it was a glob of weight. More like 4oz, stella 18000 on a 12' century rod. Last weekend at a casting event on the cape.

There was a guy here calling himself Rod n Reel, spinning as I recall.  A great overhead power caster and a good tackle designer too;  he had a great technique for fastening a clam bait.  Knowledgeable guy. His opinion would be valuable. 

 

It seems like the old pros aren't as willing to talk on these kind of sites anymore.  If so, too bad. There is no replacement for long experience and lots of those sorts of anglers are the product of many generations of surf-fishers.

 

Keep up the great casting Yogi!  But better be careful not to cast over those close in fish!  It's tempting with a rig like that.

Yes...i'm familiar with Rod......have spoken to him on several occasions.  He's very helpful and knowledgable about distance casting.

 

Roof....I actually had my S8 cut down 6" so it wouldn't be "too" long, so i have it at an even 11'.......The damn rod is so light i cant even begin to explain.  I match it with the Ultegra 5500 Ci4 and i can plug with this thing all day with an overhead cast.  When i really have to lay into it, it impresses me all the time and never let's me down.  Also, although not a traditional pencil popping rod, with a flick of your wrist....it makes any pencil bounce like popcorn.  Overall, when i have to hit that second bar here in South Jersey, i can't find a better rod.
