I am just getting started on some bluefish and striper fishing from the surf, and not too familiar with what are good lures to use (I have somewhat of a general idea). I live in NJ and I will be fishing surf/bays/and peirs. What would be some good lures to start out with? Thanks :D

Super strike sinking and floating poppers...

This. Don't go crazy with colors either. White and a few dark will be fine. Maybe some bucktails and trailers...I like Gulp alive 4" mullets on bucktails to about an ounce, pork rinds are great too when you can find them...add a couple pencils, your good to start.

I would classify the lures based on where you are fishing in the water column. Near the bottom, I use bucktails and weighted swim shads like the Tsunami shads mentioned earlier. I like the 5' version. Middle of the water column, you might want some diving swimmers like the SP minnow and some tins like a Hopkins or Kastmaster. Top of the water some poppers and light minnow plugs like a Redfin or a Bomber. Just my two cents.
