Shark Fishing Rod

Im planning on purchasing a surf rod that is 10' and is a medium heavy. The main plan for it is shark fishing but the reason its not a 12' heavy is because I dont want to use it for just sharks(for blues and stripers as well). I live in New Jersey so I will only be fishing for sand sharks and an occasional sand tiger if im lucky. But overall will a medium heavy 10' rod be fine if I hooked a sand shark/tiger over 5'? Thanks for the help :D

In my opinion you want a heavy action rod that can throw at least 5 oz and a good sided chuck for sharks. I also fish jersey for sharks and use a 11' heavy 3-8 oz casting rod that I consider on the light side but adequate for the Brown sharks I have caught and is my heavy rod for bass and blues in rough surf when I need 5-6 oz. There aren't many 10' rods that are heavy action that can throw the weight you need for shark bait unless you cut one down or have a custom built. I also don't like 12' rods but if I was to get another shark rod I'd get a diawa emcast 11'4" rated 4-10 oz. my buddy has it and it comfortably throw 8 and a chunk or 6 and a bunker head but it is heavy for all but roughest conditions for bass and blues.

Thanks Jim! But is the fight with the blues still enjoyable on a heavy rod?(never tried it, ive only used medium and medium heavies on them)

No the 11' 3-8 oz I use isn't a lot of fun with fish up to 10 pounds or so but if I need 6 oz to hold in a rough surf when throwing a chunk then a rod that can only throw 4 will not work. For a shark over 5' the rod needs some backbone and I consider my 11' heavy to be as light as I would go for sharks. If you go lighter have a reel with a lot of capacity at least 350-400 yards. My biggest shark was only a little short of 5' and it ran more than 100 yards off of a 100 yard cast and early on I thought I might get spooled. For what you asking my opinion is you want 2 rods. A medium action for blues/stripers and a second heavy action rod for sharks that also works in rough surf for stripers/blues.
