scoobydoo
Tiagra 30 and 50 wide long range specials Crowder bent butt for the 50s straight for the 30s Troll first....then look to plug. Black hole rods are great. Worth the hype. NJ Dave
Fished a shimano jigging rod, matched with a torium 16. Pencil thin rod as soft as an overcooked noodle. Took 3 tuna between 40-60 lbs in no time. The rods do all the work. It was almost effortless.
fmtuna
This is a big, broad question like, I'm getting my drivers license, what kind of truck should I buy? A serious response would take me 2 hours to write for you, so why don't you just come over to the showroom. We can run thru your options based on the kind of boat you are running or riding on. bbfish
I started getting more into tuna fishing as friends have started upgrading to bigger boats the last few years. First thing I learned is DO NOT go cheap on gear. You spend 100-200 bucks per guy just on gas to get out there, might as well get gear that can withstand the power of fish out there. Do you actually say that to the person who invites you? Troll first to find the fish or marks. Haha I should probably rephrase that, if the plan is to go plug, I'm in. Luckily the guys I go with are pretty much all on the same page.
UniqueTouch11
How far do you need to be out to catch some Tunas off Jersey coast?
scoobydoo
During the fall run market sized tuna are within casting range of all the nJ beaches. During the fall I've seen pods breaching 5' out of the water withing 300 yards. I've had a few shots at them with poppers. Only hooked up twice on trolling gear. 200lb fish in 40 feet of water are tough to stop and will melt line line off a 50 wide in short order. Then you have to dodge bunker spoons and such which is near impossible which ended the fights of the two hook ups. Outside of the fall run. You are looking at roughly 40 70 and 110 miles from shark river inlent. "Panacheless is no way to go through life" Tims
