Because they're generally connected, all those dinky S. Florida ponds and canals can hold fish (and fish much bigger than you'd expect). For instance, I've seen nice sized peacocks and LMB in the drainage ditches off I-95 that are five feet wide and a couple feet deep. But because the waterbodies are so small, they're very sensitive to environmental factors. For instance, if the drainage connecting it to the canal network gets clogged, oxygen levels can drop really quickly and it can become a dead zone. Or if there's not been enough rain and water levels get low, or if there's chemical runoff that affects the pH levels, etc. So that's a roundabout way of saying "go fish it and find out."
