Sabiki from shore

7ft rod should be enough.  I find a longer rod helps since these rigs are pretty long.  They're supposed to resemble shrimps or baby bait fish so it'll work on any fish that will go after these bait.

What is your rod rated for? I can't cast a 1 oz sinker that far with a broomstick either. Make sure your rod bends nicely and slingshots it out. You want a rod rated for around 1 oz.

I've done it. I use it in Florida to catch small whiting for bait. That's a lot of hooks to be throwing. I would cut mine so there are only two or three hooks. Becomes a mess very fast if you hook a large baitfish in the surf.

What rod and reel type setup are you using?

I currently use a 7ft "bait stick" sabiki rod with a bait caster reel and 1oz bank sinker. And I usually fish it off piers and docks which already puts me out a decent distance over the water so I dont really have to cast that much further, about 20-40 yds is good. And vertical jig every few mins. Been successful for pollocks and macks. Also makes it quick and easy to deploy and put away when I'm done without having to worry about all the hooks.

Before that, I was using a 8ft spinning rod and reel setup and 1oz bank sinker. I'd trim the rig down to 3-4 hooks to keep it manageble. Same fishing techinique and places. But would need time to tie the rig up and then cut it off after use.

i have been debating a dedicated sabiki rod for that but currently use a spinning rod from either the kayak or docks. ill have to try cutting some hooks off first, thanks for the ideas!
