I bought a used 975 a while ago and it has always been tight. It doesn't cast well, and feels like there is too much tension when turning the handle.

I took it apart and it has the tension seems to be in the line guide assembly (either the line guide shaft of . I know I need to lube it, but would like any suggestions if someone thinks the problem is more than lubrication.

I think you are on the right track. From the pictures it sure needs a cleaning.

To remove the left side you have to remove those 3 small screws shown. Then you can get to that bearing. Also lube the level wind gear with light oil only. Use grease on the end of a screwdriver to hold the screws to get them back in.

There is a bushing on the spool that can be changed to a bearing also. If I remember right...

Clean and lube all the level wind parts with a very light oil.

The ones I have worked on never had great freespool if that helps.
