Throwing bait this fall

Your choice. I always use a fish finder rig with a short 10-15inch leader, shorter if using a head. You get the best of both worlds, castability and the fish can free run with the bait! If you are in the surf, a decent lob cast is all that is really needed to get between second and third wave or so. The fish are in the surf.

I use both. With heads the FF is a no brainer to me. With clams or even small chunks l Iike the hi lo w/ circles and short droppers. The circles help prevent deep hooks and tend to protect w/ blues cause the hook is in the jaw. The short droppers help w/ casting. As far as a clam "floating", I do believe they get tossed around in the current. The angle of a hi lo in the surf wouldn't have the hi chunk suspended too far off the bottom, prolly just kissing the sand or dancing around w the current a bit. I like the hi lo as two shots and twice the scent.

That being said I don't bait fish much any more. Plugging is more fun to me.
