Obama on Moms Who Stay Home to Raise Kids: 'That's Not a Choice We Want Americans to Make'

So, is Obama saying that women shouldn't be allowed to make choices? Is he saying that women shouldn't be allowed to be stay at home moms? Or that there shouldn't be stay at home dads? Why shouldn't people be able to make this choice for themselves?

During a speech in Rhode Island today, President Obama called for more taxpayer-spending on pre-school in order to "make sure that women are full and equal participants in our economy" and said the following:

Sometimes, someone, usually mom, leaves the workplace to stay home with the kids, which then leaves her earning a lower wage for the rest of her life as a result. And that’s not a choice we want Americans to make.

He's saying that there should be better daycare options and broader family leave laws. At least, that's how it reads in context.

Keeping it in context is no fun. It's way over RWs head anyway.

I didn't read it as an affront to mothers. Wage equality is a hot-button issue right now.

So should we give mothers more taxpayer money or simply force whoever they work for to pay them for not working? Why should the responsibility for raising the child NOT be the decision and responsibility of the parents? Why should taxpayers be on the hook for raising children. Seems the forward march of socialism is pretty relentless.

no.

But if the employee wants to willingly pay a woman who wants to stay home and take care of their child, let them.

However, Obama wants to get young kids in public school as soon as possible. Easier to brainwash them.

I agree with all that.

any time Obama speaks, it's about getting more people under control of the government

that's the context of it.

I don't think that was the point. The point is that right now, many families choose to be two-income households and he was saying preschool would allow mothers to to continue to work. Now, what allows quality preschools to operate? Money. Either the mothers and fathers pay for it or the taxpayers pay for it. Personally, I think the parents who make the choice to work should also make the choice to pay for their children's care.

The issue is:  A mom knows that a family needs two incomes in order to afford a mortgage, while on the other hand, knowing that if she does go to work, that income will go to pay for child day care.

This is beneath RW's nose—and some others'.

What's more important to you, a shiny new car or having a parent home for the kids until they are school age?

We choose a parent at home, therefore we have a smaller affordable house, one new car, one car from 2003, etc.

We were blessed to be able to do that for the 1st 3 kids, the 4th put us over the top so now wifey works some weekend shifts. Some couples have to have both working; IMO some don't but they have to have "things" to show off so both work full-time.

BUT, our kids are either with her, or me.

Agreed. The increasing necessity of the two income household is a challenge. It definitely created some issues in my house.

So, you have a job with which the expenses of a five member family (but not six) were manageable.  When children reach school age, the need for some others will change to be a choice between either after school programs or making your kids latchkey children.
