Spin Time

3 posts in this topic

Hope this thread isn't too rediculous. You Penn guys have lots more experience then me. Maybe you could add some insight.

Just cleaned my SQL15 and SQL40. Neither reel really needed major attention as they have only a few weeks in the salt, and I flush them after every use.

Here is the question: I gave the 40 the spin test after cleaning and oiling (Quantum Hot Sauce) and was surprised by how long it would spin in free spool. I estimate over a minute (all of the clocks in the house are digital, and I'm retired so I don't own a watch with a sweep second hand anymore). The 15 would spin about 15 seconds, mags covered (counting one thousand one, one thousand two). Is this result something you would expect? I opened the 15 a second time, but found nothing too out of shape.

Thanks in advance for your time.

Actually only a minute spin time is fairly low for a non-mag reel.

Be sure the "Live Spindle" is completely cleaned out of grease and dirt, then use your favorite speed oil product.

There are some YouTube vids of live spindle mag reels with the magnets removed that push 4 minutes.
