I wanted to fish this afternoon, but first hand reports from the beach say it's muddy and too windy to stay in touch with your lures. When I look at the NOAA marine forecast for our area, I see a few terms that confuse me. Generally, I understand wind strength and direction, and wave heights, but the period and swell info sometimes makes me wonder. Can anyone clarify the following forecast for today and tomorrow? Keep in mind, this forecast is for 0-20 miles out, not just on the beach.

Forecast for this afternoon a dominant period of 11 seconds. Is this supposed to be the time between waves? Cause I was down the beach last night and it was more like half a second between waves.

In Monday's forecast, it shows a NW swell, then later a W swell, is that even possible here? Waves moving off the beach?

You have to realize, that besides sucking, NOAA's forecasts go out 20nm off the beach, and cover a rather large swath N-S

That honking NW makes the beach flat as a pancake, but at the far E side of the forecast zone you better believe its victory at sea conditions.

Do yourself a favor and put the free windalert app on your phone. You can get current conditions and hourly wind forecasts with swell data/forecasts for a number of locations up and down the coast. You can also look at windalert dot com to see what I'm talking about, but I actually like the mobile version better.

I use the app for kitesurfing. Its uisually very accurate, within a couple knots 95% of the time. Very much unlike NOAA

Victory at Sea, I like it.

Would not have wanted to be at sea anywhere near here either Sat or Sun., I live 12 miles from the beach, and when there's a breeze at my house, the wind is blowing at the beach. When the wind is blowing at my house, it is stupid at the beach. On Sat & Sun, it was stupid at my house, don't want to know what the beach was like.

I'll take a look at Windalert, Thanks.
