John P
It won't be too long before the Feds come in and end all the striper takes just like 1980's, Were all askin:mad:g for it because we have no self control and need to take all we can get until it's game over. Just a matter of time. Don't buy too much new gear. I've seen this picrture before.
Fergal
What the Feds did in the 80s is often misunderstood. They may get involved again but you're going to have to see things get a lot worse. ASMFC - Destroying public resources and fisheries one stock at a time since 1942. Too many checks and balances in management policies now, compared to then (was active at mtgs, etc., back then in the 70's); back then, about the only regulation was a length limit (16", fork length) no bag limits, no seasons, no EEZ.....etc. Commercial season was unregulated (except for sales data), most states had no licensing, no laws regarding catch methods, etc.,anybody could sell to restaurants, etc.....definitely like the Wild West.... turkaholic
Ya the "Wild West"also saw the last buffalo fall ,and then wondered why. Why not close a staging ground like that? May be that is what it will take to give them a chance, instead of shooting fish in a barrel you would need to work a little harder ,but the fish would still be around. Maybe it would keep 4 states worth of fishermen off that spot and closer to home. Why is this area so special to stripers? Do we really know? Maybe there needs to be research done on this. There seems to be lots of money to waste in government, why not on this. All the funds that come from our SW licenses would be a good start. Fish politics are stinking up the beach. Fish politics are stinking up the beach. If as you say they should close staging areas like the SW ledge then why not Montauk, Sandy Hook, etc. If they close these staging areas then why not go with a moratorium? or better yet make stripers a game fish? I went through the last crash and was hoping not to see another before my end but that doesn't seem likely. We have to change our attitude towards keeping and killing everything and the environment in general. We are our own worst enemy when it comes to our natural resources. pakalolo
while the population of bass is down from the HISTORIC high numbers of recent years, the bass are far from being "in trouble". Nothing is stopping you from releasing every fish you catch. IN FAVOR OF COMMERCIAL FISHING AND SURFING THE NORTH SIDE MAY THE RICH GET RICHER!! FISH ARE FOOD!!
