Given the negative comments on Gibbs plugs, beyond changing out hooks or dumping them on the BST,  what changes/mods are recommended to make Gibbs plugs more canal worthy?

There is no best size, shape, or action. The more you have the better off you are although the real pretty ones cost a lot. Choosing just one restricts what you can do quite a lot, but you get real good with the one you have. Most guys start with a medium sized one and eventually move up from there until they get tired of big stuff and eventually try the little ones. Color isn't as important as action, a good one will work for you regardless of color. You can adjust them a little, but most are going to do what they want. Be sure to rinse them after you use them or else they get ratty. If you get a lot of them they can be trouble to carry together. Even when you are not using them they are fun to look at.

Hope this is helpful.

to me, its hard to say "the best metal lip swimmer", i think they are ALL good, i applaud all builders of MLS's, if i have to say one, it would be the one that you are catching on, for that day ...

Beachmaster 6" danny is still my favorite.  Have a pile of others, some fancy and some not, but the 6" Danny still sees the most water.

I’ve caught fish on no name swimmers. The best one cast well and don’t spin when cast.

And a loaded Redfin rocks.
