Help with an old glass rod

Mr. Goldberg, I have an Orvis Fullflex A fiberglass spinning rod that I bought back in the mid-70's.The finish is checking and peeling and I'd like to upgrade the guides. First off, how do I go about removing the old finish? Next, are the new finishes compatible with fiberglass from that time period? I emailed Orvis a while back but they said they couldn't help me. Any advice will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

After removing the guides, gently sand down the blank with 600 grit paper to smooth out the surface.

Thoroughly clean the blank surface with alcohol and a lint free cloth.

I like to use Clemens Crystal Coat to refinish a blank. Follow the mixing instuctions and apply a very thin coat. I found that by wearing a rubber glove and pouring a small amount of the mixed finish in my gloved hand, I can apply a thin coat of finish to the blank.

Apply two thin coats in this manner waiting 3 days between coats and sanding down the blank between coats.

After applying the second coat, wait three days to allow the finish to cure before wrapping on your guides.
