I hardly build surf rods, but here goes.

Conventional does NOT require that large of a guide. You can drop form teh 40 down to a 25 (or 20), and if you are going to use a size 12 for the tip, that is the size of the smallest guide you want to use. You probably checked your spinning rods that's where you came up with those sizes & # of guides. With a conventional, you can use more and smaller guides than on a spinner.

More of a ballpark would be size 25 20 16 12 - buy these guides and test cast to find out where they go. If you are new to Rod Building, you should get a book to help you along.

#40 is WAY too big for a conventional rod.. that rod should have minimum 7 guides.. 8 or even nine would be best. start with a 25 (depending on whcih reel you are using).. something big like a newell 344 use a 25, if its a squidder or abu 7000, then use a 20. just make sure it is far enough away from the reel face to decrease the angle. so, #25,20,16,12,12,12,12,12 and 12 tip.. you dont want to go too small with the guides on that blank because the blank is wide and it'll look a little wierd.

Good luck..

Hard to say for sure without knowing the reel seat to butt distance but try this as a start and test with static deflection

Put first guide 32 inches from reel face.

BNLG

25, 20, 16 , 16 , 12 ,12, 12 then PST 12 or 16 tip. if more guides are needed , add another 12

525 is a full width spool, stripper should wind up 32-38in from reel seat, closer to 38 the better,IMO, depending on butt length.

BNLG 25-20-16 and as many 12's as needed out to the tip, probably seven guides total, maybe eight. I'd use a sic 16 tip. BC is right, a 10 ring is small on a large diameter blank like a 1215.Rough starting point from tip back:

5in-11in-18in-26in-35in-46in-58in, with a 26in butt length that puts the reel 36in from the stripper, string it up and put a good flex in the blank, adjust spacing as needed from there.
