Can you offer any advice on how to align the guides along a conventional or spinning blank to ensure that their in line? Currently, Ive just been taping them on pretty close and then doing the bottom wrap. This way the guides can still be moved a little and I can eye it up the best I can.

The guides should only be wrapped with enough thread tension to be able to do a final alignment before applying the first coat of finish. Here is how I do the final alignment:

Mount your reel on the rod making sure the reelseat is tightened securely.

Center the stripper guide with the reel. Remove the reel.

Align the remaining guides with the stripper guide.

Rotate the rod 180 degrees and sight down the top of the rod. Adjust the guide alignment as necessary so the guides are dissected by the line of the blank.

Remount your reel and run the line through the guides. Apply tension to the line and watch how the line moves from guide to guide under tension. The line should go over the center of the base of the ring. Now make any final adjustments.

Glue on your tip and align the tip.
