First guide on a conventional

Hi Al. What's the down side of putting the first guide on a conventional too close to the reel.

I'm building a 7 foot light action conventional. The rod bends so far into the handle that It looks like the first guide should be about 20 inches from the reel center. It will have a Calcutta 250 on it and probably a light braid or 10 lb mono. You think 20 inches is too close?

Salt,

If that is where the guide should go based on a stress distribution test, so be it. I have a few slow action rods where the stripper is that close.

The Calcutta 250 has a narrow spool, so having the stripper that close should not adversely impact the castability of the rod. I would also use a size 20 as a stripper guide.

Thanks Al. The first guide position was determined using a 20 guide. I did purchase a 25 guide figuring I would redo the stress test and see how far back I could push the larger (higher) guide. What is the down side of using too large a guide?
