Test Casting

GSB1201L with a 40HH gathering guide - Penn 706Z.

Last weekend I finally got a chance to test the guide spacing. With 25-30kt winds it probably was not the optimal day to test.

Anyway, when I finished casting and moving the guide, I noticed some marks on the back side of the blank just under the gathering guide.

Is the line getting clogged at the guide, wrapping around the blank, and slapping the back of the rod?

Thanks in advance for any tips,

Q

Q,

You are getting ballooning causing the line to wrap around to the backside of the blank.

Try positioning the stripper guide approximately 42-45 inches from the face of the spool and see how that works. keep moving the stripper to a maximum of 50 inches. Keep test casting until you are happy with the results.

Depending on the line you are using, my guess is that the stripper will settle in 45-48 inches from the face of the spool.
