Weekend In Montauk.

The fishing was very strange this weekend in Montauk. We chunked bass on Thursday morning and caught our limit to 20# in the morning. We fluked the rest of the day in the North Rips. Lots of fish but very few keepers.

Friday was a total bust on chunking bass. No one was catching. We left the bass fleet aound 10 AM to look for bigger fluke on the southside but we came up empty. We ended up catching a few bushels of sea bass to 3# on Frisbees. We returned to chunking in the afternoon, but still no luck.

At 3PM, as we started to pull the anchor to head home, we spotted birds working south of us. We gave chase and found the bass stacked up on the bottom in 80 feet. We diamond jigged our limit to 35# in fifteen minutes and headed home. It was a long day.

Seems like there is still plenty of bait that the bass are feeding on and they and not yet settled into their summer haunts on the rips.

On the surf scene, a friend fished the southside at first light on Saturday morning and nailed a 33# fish on a pencil popper.

Also, some small bluefish were around.
