Al, I am going to build a new surf stick (spinning) using a 10 1/2' G. Loomis rated for 1/2oz to 3oz. I am looking for recommendatiions on guide type, sic vs. hardaloy, high frame vs. regular frame, tip size, guide size and guide spacing. I am also curious which type of guide holds up best when using the new braided lines? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks..... pikiemike

Mike,

Both hardaloy and SIC will hold up using braided line. I would go with the high-frame Fuji in the following sizes:

40HH, 30H, 25H, 25M, 20H and an SIC spinning tip with a #20 ring.

Position the 40HH approximately 45-50 inches from the face of the reel and your 20H 8 inches from the tip. Space your remaining guides in 1 inch increasing increments toward the butt. Then do a stress distribution test and adjust your spacing as need.

Tape the guides in place and test cast it. Adjust the position of the stripper guide until you are attaining a good casting distance. Now readjust the spacing of the other guides.

Al
