Spine on multi-piece fly rod

Rate this topic

3 posts in this topic

I'm just getting into rod building, having recently picked up George Clemen's Advanced Rod Building and Tom Kirkman's Rod-Building Guide , and I was wondering if finding the spine on the butt section of a 4-piece fast action rod was necessary, since the rod casts from only the upper sections.

Also, for the same rod, which is a 9' 7wt. TFO TiCr, would stripping guide sizes 20 16 12, then single foot guide sizes 6 6 6 5 5 5 and a tip size 5 work?

Thanks for any replies.

I would try my best to align the spline on all of the individual sections.

The guide sizes sound fine to me, tape them up and see how they look/ test cast.

Will a 5 be enough to allow the knot that connects your leader to pass through ?
