Ugly Stick w/ 706Z

A few years ago I bought a 10' one piece Ugly Stick and Fuji guides (light green) from Midland Tackle.

The guides were sold with the rod, so I imagine that they were the right size.

When I first went to test the rod there was considerable line slap, so I bought the largest wire guide I could find, and tested the rod again.

Again I could not avoid line slap. I brought the wire guide down to about 20" from the reel, and still thought I heard line slap.

Is there a trick to detect line slap?

Another observation. Even when I moved the guide about 40" away from the reel I noticed that when simply cranking line in the line was hitting the far side of the guide only. The diameter of the line was about 3/4" and about 2" away from the blank. In other words A smaller guide further away from the blank would seen to be just as efficient. Should the line be going through the center of the guide?

Do I have the wrong reel? 706Z.
