Spinning rod set-up?

This really is a matter of personal preference. Place it where it feels most comfortable for fishing for hours at a time, not where it's optimum for two or three balls-to-the-wall casts. Wrap the butt section in adhesive tape, take a roll of electrical tape and the reel you're going to use outside, tape on the reel at various distances up the butt, make a few dry casts in the backyard, and mark the butt where the reel feels most comfortable.

I tend to go with a lower reel placement for spinning reels than I do with conventionals, as I have a tendency to pronate my wrist on the cast if the reel's too high on the butt, which causes tendonitis in my elbow. I have a 1266/2 spinning rod and I had the seat placed so the reel stem is 22" from the butt. On conventionals I have the reel 25" up the butt.
