Rod grip

I have an older rod that I'm restoring for a friend. I've got it almost perfect except for the rod grip. Its a black foam type that you find on common store bought rods. Problem is that its old, dirty and hard as a rock. Is there a way to clean it and restore its cushion and softness? If it wasnt such an odd shape and cut, I'd just replace it. Thoughts? Thanks!

It is a relatively easy thing to do if you have a power-lathe. Starting with 80 grit sandpaper strip off the crusty outer layer. Then proceed through finer grades of sandpaper until it is silky smooth.

You can do it without a lathe but it will be very laborious.
