Cutting off old guides

What's the preferred method for removing guides and cleaning a blank in preparation for new guides? I have custom a rod that I like the blank, just not the guide set-up, and wanna make a few changes.

I assume an exacto blade, REEEEALLY careful-like?

Thanks...

YOu asked at a good time since I have been doing just that all day. I use a hair dryer to soften up the finish and then a serated knife to cut. I cut along the guide foot so that I don't cut the blank up. When the finish is hot it will feel a little soft and after it is cut the thread and finish will just peel off really easily. Try it I think that you will like it.
