custom painting my surf rod

I'm in the market for a 10' St Croix Ben Doerr, and I'm kind of toying with the idea of doing a custom paint job with my airbrush. I have been using an acrylic based paint acceptable for automotive use for lures with nice results, and would like to use it on the rod. I'm not looking to paint the entire rod, what I'd like to do is dust some swirl patterns onto it. What, if anything can I use for a protective clear coat which will give me a smooth finish, adhere to the rod properly, and not diminish the rod's performance?

You can airbrush an autobody clearcoat onto the blank in multiple thin coats rubbing each coat down with 1500 grit wet paper. The resulting finish will be extremely durable.
