plate seat orientation

I have one rod with a plate seat set up uplocking. since I either palm my reel or wrap my fingers around rod above the reel it is never in my way. I'm having another put on my new rod the same way. The only problem iv'e had is the little flap doodad tends to come up every once in a while. An elastic like those used on lobsta claws fixes it slick.

Thanks longshot. The only reason I was considering downlocking was in case the little lock opened up (as you mention) the hood may stay in position. This orientation, however, does tend to put the bulk of the seat above the reel. I guess I'll give it a shot both ways & see what happens.

The rubber band is a good idea. icon14.gif

Mine never let go. Iv'e hit it with my fingers and felt it move up a bit that's all. It's definitely more comfortable than any screw type reel seat, except you dont have the option of a trigger. Iv'e had my rods made without any seat so I can clamp my reel on and see where I like it. I like 23 inches butt to center of reel seat on both light and heavy duty rods.
