Bamboo Rod Failures

Al-

I have restored a number of vintage bamboo fly rods, and have noticed that they seem prone to fail just above the first ferrule. Is this a common experience? Is it caused by the fiber weakening due to age and/or drying out? Is there any way to soak and "impregnate" the stripped rod with oil of some sort (a la Orvis) to strengthen the fibers?

Thanks.

Alby,

I am a total novice when it comes to bamboo. There is an impregnation process that is used to seal the bamboo fibers that Orvis has.

I would recommend you either do some research on bamboo rod building and restoration and also contact Russ Gooding at www.goldenwitch.com. He is my guru on bamboo rod building and restoration.
