splining revisited

I'm in the process of trying to locate the spline on the upper section of my 2-piece flyrod blank. When I load the blank with one hand on the butt & the tip on a table, it settles into one spot just like it should. Then when I rotate the blank 180 degrees, it settles into another spot. These very discernable points are obviously the soft & hard spines. The trouble is, I can't discern which is which - both feel the same & seem to have the same resistance.

At this point, can I assume that choosing which spline (hard or soft) on which to place the guides is irrelevant, so long as they're placed on one or the other?
