The power rating of a blank or rod determines it's lure and line class within a particular series of blanks or rods.

The example you gave was an XPS704. The XPS designates a spinning blank or rod. The 704 means 7-foot and a "4" power. The power is rated light 1-3, medium 4-5, medium heavy 7 and heavy 8.

Hereis a good example. Seeker has a series of live bait fast action blanks in their Black Steel series rated as follows.

CLB 701 through 708.

CLB = Composite Live Bait.

CLB701-702 are great blanks for porgies and flounder in the bay.

CLB704-6 are great ocean fluking and sea bass blanks.

CLB708 - is a great chunking and eeling rod from a boat and a great inshore tog blank. It is also used in Florida for king mackeral and live baiting sailfish.

Hope this helps.
