Montauk Rod suggestions

I'm looking at building a 2 pc. spinner for Montauk. It will not get constant use, as I won't get out there that often. I was looking at Rainshadow because of their great reputation and reasonable cost. If I'm throwing strictly artificials, proabably 3 oz. max, which is the better 11 1/2' blank to build, the 1386 or the 1387?

My idea of the perfect M rod is one based on the Lami GSB1321M. Having said that, the RS1387 is a reasonable approximation of that blank. Not equal but in the same catagory. That opinion is based on fishing experience with both, not from catalog comparisons. It can do big pencil poppers, darters and the 1 1/2 oz bucktails. Standard Montauk stuff.

Thanks, Steve. I pretty much heard the same thing from Crazy Alberto yesterday, when I saw him. Seems the Rainshadow 1387 is a faster blank whereas the Lami is more parabolic. But I can't see spending the price difference for a rod I won't use constantly. For frequent use, though, I did build a Lami GSB108 1L which I love.

I've been thinking about building a plugging rod for Montauk and Squibnocket to match with a VS 250 I have. I was leaning towards a one piece and was thinking about an allstar 1266. Not that I'm a hard core pencil popper guy, but I do like to throw them and I'm guessing the 1266 wouldn't be very much fun for that.

After reading some recent post, I'm now thinking about the XRA 1322. I do perfer a faster action rod, but if I'm going to do any pencil popper work I guess I'll need to compromise a bit in that department. Will the XRA 1322 do a decent job with the pencil poppers and still be a good tool for the 1.5 oz jigs and bigger swimmers? Are there any other blanks I should be thinking about? There seems to be a lot of blanks from the UK being talked about these days.

Mike,

In My opinion, there isnt a better rod out there... the XRA 1322 is a cadillac. I was a 132 1M user for a long time and finally went to a Ron Arra in the middle of last summer... Im totally hooked, so much so that I sold off my last 132 1M's and got another Arra... (I bought a 1M blank a couple weeks ago tho). LOL

See if someone will let you test drive it, you wont wanna give it back..

Thanks guys,

It sounds like I wouldn't be dissapointed with the XRA 1322. Hopfully I can lay my hands on one to check it out before I drop the $$$ on the blank.

BTW, do either of you know if a size 20 or 22 real seat would work on that rod?

I don't have the energy right now to walk down to the basement and check cwm33.gif
