cutting a rod

Hey guys,whats the best way to cut a blank,will a regular hacksaw be ok or am I takin a chance of splintering it.And yes it does have a cork handle around it already.THANX

Milo,

 

Sounds like you want to cut the handle area of the rod, possibly to shorten the butt.

 

You can use a fine tooth hacksaw. I would first wrap a band of masking tape around the area you want to cut using the edge of the tape as a guide.

 

Cut slowly and carefully. If the blade starts to stick, rotate the rod slightly and continue to cut. You should not have a problem.

Funny this comes up I just cut my first rod about 10 minutes ago. I went out and got a 32 tooth hack saw blade wrapped the blank with tape and did just as Al suggested. It came out ok!! I did a couple of practice attempts on a spare piece of blank first, just to get a feeling for it. It was a fiberglass blank, It got stuck a few times but turning the blank got it going again.
