Rod Building Motor

Im looking to build my own rod building desk. There was an article in the recent fisherman mag. about one and it gave me some ideas. My question is, where do you get the motor? I looked up sewing machine motors and they can get expensive, as can the "rod building motors" in catalogs. I see a motor on ebay for $25 but it spins at 7000 rpms. Seems high to me but I guess with some pulleys I could come down some. Any ideas would be great.

I use a sewing machine motor that I got at a vacuum store with a pedal to control it for less than 10 bucks..You will have to make some kind of pulley system to slow it down though..Mine was rated at 4000rpms and with the pulley system I made the chuck only spins about 40 rpms..You want these little motors to spin at almost there rated rpm otherwise they heat up and burn out..

The foot pedal control has a reostat that regulates the speed of the motor.

You can purchase the various motorizing parts separately by finding one of the rod building suppliers that carries the Pac Bay Rodsmith.
