I recently purchased my self a Van Staal VS200G surf reel. I have been fishing for over 30 years, however never used a manual pick up roller. I would appreciate any tips or suggestions on line pick up after the cast.

Welcome, Wet Lines smile.gif Not that Al doesn't know lots and lots of stuff, but this really is a rod building forum, much as that "Ask Al" title does sorta sound like a general advice platform wink.gif Reel questions will usually get you a prompt answer on the Main Forum, but, long as we're here, try this...

That's an excellent, recent thread that will produce all of the answers for you.

Just pick the line up with your index finger and turn the handle. The roller on the VS is pretty big and hard to miss. Practice for about 15 minutes in the daytime. Watch your lure, and as it's just about to hit, tap your index finger on the right hand side of the spool to stop the line. Then, pick it up with that finger and turn the handle, and it should catch.
