Finding the spine....

What is the best way of finding the spine of a blank? I've tried the old rolling the blank with the tip on the ground method but never seem to get it right. I've sighted down the blank and waited until the tip "pointed" down and then marked the top of the blank as the spine. Any better ways? Thanks!

Bass,

1. Wrap a piece of masking tape around the blank at the midpoint of the blank.

2. Make sure the butt end edge of the blank is smooth and squared off.

3. Find a hard smooth surface, a table top will do, and place the butt end of the blank on the smooth surface.

4. Supporting the tip end of the blank at a 45 degree angle with an open palm, gently press down on the blank at the midpoint. The blank will rotate and come to rest with the spine on the OUTSIDE of the curve.

5. Mark the spine's position on the masking tape.

That's it.
